Short Story

An Agnostic In An Avalanche

by michaelcahill

The clock has stopped. It feels like breakfast time. Why, I don't know. I'm starving. I'd eat a rock at this point. My phone died two days ago. I imagine I'm not far behind. The only light squeezes through a snow-burdened skylight. It's filtered through God knows how much snow. The light is dim. Angela's been dead for three days and starting to smell. Cannibalizing her is quickly becoming academic.

If there's a God, why'd he entomb me in an avalanche? Why'd he let me watch my wife's heart stop beating? Why am I faced with becoming a cannibal as a means to survive? If I'm rescued, is it a miracle? Do I then owe God for my existence? Ha! Should I THANK Him?

Yeah, You're one mysterious individual. I can't say I'm a fan of your "ways".

Please God, help me.
