Things Change

Through the eyes of a child Contest Winner

“Sit down, little bro I’ve a story to tell. I know I look scary and sometimes smell. It is something quite interesting you see. Something bizarre is happening to me. Once I was short but now I’m tall. And I’m hairy where once I was bald. I seem to be acting pretty weird. And I think I’m growing a beard. I get a funny feeling when I’m around girls in school. I don’t even want to tell you what happens when we get into the pool.

Strange new thoughts are shooting through my head. When I sleep even stranger things happen in my bed. I know you may not understand what I'm trying to say. You look like you just want to go outside and play. Give me a few more seconds and then you can go. I have a couple more things you really should know.

Some people are now saying I look like Dad. To be honest, since he’s old, I find that kind of sad. My voice keeps changing when I’m singing a song. It makes grumbling sounds and the words come out all wrong. Yesterday Dad had our doctor take a look at me. He gave me a shot and said, “Relax, son, its only puberty.”

When it was over I didn’t get a sticker or a lollipop. Dad just talked about birds and bees until I begged him to stop.

So, I guess there’s nothing I can do. Except promise to be there when it happens to you.

Great, now I rhyme everything I say. This really isn’t my day.”
