Old Roads

Old Roads

I took a trip today exploring a country road
The thought came to me
my body is like that old road

it is a much traveled and worn path
With curves, bumps, and dips
Some places too narrow and others too wide

Grey curly moss hung low from the trees
The wind whipped my grey curls
And I smiled with pleasure
I didn't care if it caused another wrinkle

The road went on straight ahead
Cloudy eyes saw only a short distance
Leaves and branches had fallen into the ditch
Clogging the flow of the recent rain
I thought of clogged arteries from years of junk food

Like the strong old trees all around
I've had broken limbs and scars
It all adds to the character
Of who I am.

My body has been a good old friend
We have gone a long way together.
One day the road will end
My tired suit will be worn out
The who I am... is not my body
I will go on forever
