Farewell, My Friends

100 Word Story Contest Winner 

"Have to do this one last time. They're expecting."

The old lady wrapped the few remaining crumbs of her breakfast in a napkin, then padded to the porch of her small house and sprinkled her farewell gift on the wooden steps.

She mumbled, "I'm leaving . . . and I'll miss you all."

An old friend, a male cardinal, flew to a crumb on the bottom step and ate it quickly. Cocking his red head, he chortled a single note.

"You're welcome, dear . . . as always."

A cry from the car beyond. "Mother, we've got to go!"

"Bye," she said, swiping at her tears.

My 94-year-old mother-in-law is fiercely independent but lives alone 500 miles away from any family. Reluctantly, she conceded to her children's wishes and put her house up for sale and will move into a senior citizen residence near us. She loves that house, but mostly she will miss "her friends," the birds.
