The Captain burst into the crowded room. “There’s a riot out there. Protestors are burning, and looting stores. Go serve and protect, dammit!”
Sergeant Morris stood up. “Captain, it’s not worth it. We make a mistake; they blame us because we aren’t perfect. We do right; they blame because one of theirs is caught doing wrong. They hate the police. They want us gone, and we agree.”
“Do you know what will happen out there?”
“Yes, I do, and tomorrow they will too.”
“And then?”
“They’ll learn responsibility.”
“Wrong, Sergeant, responsibility has to be accepted, not forced.”
“Damn!”
