Metamorphosis

Caterpillar, you're so small
I need to bend to see you crawl.
You pause to pull your backside up,
but only move an inch and stop.

I'd like to know how much you'll grow
since you're no bigger than my toe.
Daddy says I should not touch
but let you squiggle while I watch.

He also says that very soon
you'll change into a silk cocoon
where you will sleep I know not why
and then come out a butterfly.

As I grow up what will I be?
Will I, too, morph as drastically?

Thank you Google images for this marvelous picture.

This poem was inspired by my three-year-old granddaughter who is an ardent observer of nature. Although she is quite verbal and loves to read,
she is not as precocious as the Speaker in this poem.

Not too long ago, the word "morph" was considered slang, but it has been used so often as a verb (meaning to change or transform) that it's now considered standard English by most dictionaries.
