A Trip to Infamy
by judester
Mary Anne was up before dawn to finish her packing. She was on her way to New York to work for 3 months as an au pair. Her aunt had paid for her ticket and would be waiting for her with the three children.
Mary Anne's uncle had died a few months ago.She was looking forward to helping her Aunt, taking the children to school and outings.
Mary Anne would have her own room and plenty of free time to explore New York.
She heard the black cab honk outside.
Her mother was in the kitchen with a note for her sister in America.
A few words of sympathy and a beautiful tea towel from the High Street.
This was a wonderful opportunity for her daughter.
Mary Anne rushed into the kitchen to say good bye.
Mother and daughter hugged one last time and gave each other a loving smile.
'I will write as soon as I arrive, love you.' she promised her Mum.
She ran out the door, excited to begin her new adventure.
"Southhampton docks please" she told the driver as she settled in her seat.
As they drove towards the docks, the early morning air was cool on her face. This was her first trip alone and she hugged herself in delight.
There were so many people on the docks, saying good bye and getting their luggage on board. She could see a group of men walking up the gangplank with their brass instruments reflecting in the sun.
Mary Anne paid the cab driver and stood for a moment, becoming part of the excited bustling and noise around her.
Picking up her bag and head held high, she made her way through the noisy crowd.
As the sun went behind the clouds, she whispered the name...Titanic
