At Last Light

by Marillion

At Last Light

The coastal carpet rolls, and leads my eyes
Down softer moments (rarely seen by most)—
I sink into the February freeze,
Recalibrate my mind, inhale the breeze,
Skip thoughts across the waves to feel them rise,
And hide within the tide that brims the coast.

The daylight fades, a door prepared to shut,
And harnessed by the night, the sun descends,
An orange-sherbet bauble, set to drop
Below the line where far horizons crop,
A last illumination, like the cut
Of love's detachment from its bitter ends.

A simple twilight in the winter claims
An earlier repose, and mars my sight,
So I appraise the ebbing dusk-lit fire
By sitting on a slick, half-sunken tire,
And in the lonesome glow, I catch the flames
Within my mind, to light my darkest night.
