Three lives destroyed from a heinous crime
A disturbing happening.
by Jackarrie
I looked down at the dried blood on the ground, in the lane behind our small summer cottage by the sea. My mind just could not begin to understand how supposedly sane people could do such a heinous thing to a young innocent girl. The incident had taken place only a week ago, and the blood was still there, parched in the sun. Everybody was having a wonderful time enjoying the weather, the Sea, and the beach. But we will never be able to enjoy it again.
Our daughter, Ellen, was born with a condition called Down's syndrome; this condition causes varying degrees of intellectual and physical disabilities. Ellen was a happy go lucky young girl of fifteen, a very affectionate child, with the intellecional mind of a child of eight. Everybody loved her. Ellen enjoyed going to the local grocery shop. Molly was the owner, a young widow. Her daughter Anna was only seven years of age; Ellen and Anna were best friends.
This was a safe place to be; we both fell in love with it the first time we were introduced to it by a friend. There were very few places I could relax, and be confident, in managing Ellen on my own. So when we found this heavenly place, our lives changed for the better. Tom could leave early Monday morning to go to work in the City, returning early Friday evening,
It was a horrific ordeal Ellen endured at the hands of five youths. They sadistically gang raped her seven days ago. This happened behind the local shop, while I was buying a few things for the evening tea. It was a Friday and as usual Ellen could not contain her excitement waiting for her Dad to arrive. I was laughing and joking with Molly about how Ellen loved Fridays, we never heard a sound so I never once thought that Ellen was in any kind of danger. Anna was in the living room watching cartoons; she had a bit of flu, so she was not outside with Ellen. I left the shop and called out to Ellen, I had an idea that she must have gone on home ahead of me. She had been told many times to wait, but because her Dad was due to arrive she ran on ahead of me.
I never in a million years would have dreamt what happened in the space of fifteen to twenty minutes. As I was hastily walking towards our cottage Oh my God, Is that Ellen howling something is wrong. I ran with my heart in my mouth. I will never be able to forget the look on her little face, bloody nose, and legs, I held her in my arms, we both cried, I am not sure for how long. It was Tom's voice I heard shouting" Jesus Christ what has happened".
There were five of them, but only three of them were held responsible. Two of them had a conscience and reported the incident.
Tom is packing our cases, but this time we are taking more than our cases home with us. The cottage has been put on the market. It is amazing what can happen in one week. Ellen spent one overnight in the hospital; she has not been outside the cottage since. She just sits staring into space with her teddy bear in her arms.
Yes, they may serve time for their criminal deed, but they can never mend the three lives they destroyed.
