A birthday story

Hedgehog Day

by justchillin

The sun shone through the window of the little hedgehog's home
Real soon he would awaken, and not be all alone
Gradually he stirred and stretched, and opened up his eyes
Today it was his birthday, and there was a big surprise

Of course he didn't know of this, he didn't have a clue
He thought he'd been forgotten, although his friends all knew
Breakfast time was big boiled eggs, with 'marmite' toast as well
He was pouring out his orange, as someone buzzed his bell

It was his friend the Squirrel, who had something in his hand
Hedgehog thought he had a gift, so he felt very grand
Squirrel said he'd just popped by, whilst cycling to the shop
Little hedgehog thought 'that's nice', as his jaw began to drop

He closed the door behind him, and he really felt so sad
What he thought was a good day, was looking rather bad
That's enough'! He told himself 'Enjoy it on your own'
'I'll make myself a special cake', and then he heard the phone

Praps' it was an invite, for a pressie, or a cuddle
Tripping as he ran so fast, feet all in a muddle
'Hallo' he said eagerly, but got another shock
As it was just the 'jeweller' man, who'd cleaned his cuckoo clock

Drearily he dragged his feet, and fell face down on the floor
Thinking he had lots of friends, but now, perhaps no more
He couldn't hide his hurting, so shed some tiny tears
They dribbled down his little nose, and even reached his ears

Miserably he moped and moped, and even though he tried
No way could he give a grin, until he peeped outside
'Whose giggling in my garden?' He gently pulled the door
Everyone was waving, and he could not have hoped for more

Held in their hands were birthday cards, their faces spread with smiles
Fancy food, and fizzy drinks, and presents placed in piles
Now he was hugely happy, he had his 'Hedgehog' day
He had wasted all that time, feeling sadness and dismay

He said,'Next time I'll be different, I will wait and see'
'Even though my friend's first thoughts may not have been for me'
'They were being busy, and I didn't get my way'
'As patience is a virtue,it's my lesson learned today'
