The Epic Disco
A chapter in the book The Eden Tree

The Epic Disco

by vigournet

Background
If John Morgan were a tree, he'd be an oak; others find shelter from his strength. A character firmly rooted, drawing others to his circle of family and friends: under the shadow of the Eden Tree.
One secret that remained hidden for days remained the nature of James' and Aly's 'Epic Disco'. I was gobsmacked at Becky's upstairs Fashion Department when I viewed the secret creations.

My unfamiliarity with the World of Warcraft® characters, not a disadvantage for the fancy-dress EPIC disco, as Morgan Fashion had hired, adapted, and made costumes. I knew that some of the costumes were more based on the portrayals by Tolkien.

My grey garb, long white beard, and pointed hat, were incontestably Gandalf the Grey. I may have been a World of Warcraft® mage, but my costume was demonstrably the old fire-wizard. Aly donned the part of Arwen Evenstar to partner James' Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and my wife Elizabeth transformed into Galadriel: a very wise and alluring grand-mother.

Liz refused to wear pointy ears when she protested, "there's NO way I'm looking like Spock!"

Rachel became Eowyn, an elfin hunter with bow and arrow. Sean, refusing to wear green tights as Robin Hood, had morphed into a World of Warcraft® rogue, donning grey Lee jeans, a red shirt, brown leather jacket, and a red bandana on his head.

Upon leaving the house for the party I tried out my gnarled wooden staff uttering, "KAZAM".

Liz pointed her wand at me and said, "Be Brad Pitt!", giggling she said, "Oh! That didn't work!"

A suitably attired James returned from the YMCA and collected his sword and shield, and Aly picked up her silver wand. Josh and Becky seemed to be dressed like Robin Hood -- not in tights but in green combat trousers - and a very radiant Maid Marian.

Rachel strapped her arrow quiver to her side and carried a bow in her right hand; Sean buckled his belt inserting his combat knife. The dogs accompanied Rachel the huntress with her World of Warcraft® pets. Wesley came as himself with his friend Alan, conscious that they could only stay an hour due to it being past their bedtime. Both boys had a play-fight with plastic swords during the evening.

Entering the disco marquee to the multi-coloured strobe lights, we joined the other costumed guests. James and Aly's online community were arrayed in self-made or hired fancy-dress.

"OK, explain it to me," I asked Petros, the best man, a "Shadow Priest" attired in a purple smock with gold-braided collar and sleeves

"Sure, Mr. Morgan," he replied, pointing at various costumed characters. "Thudd, or Martin from Liverpool, is a Protection Warrior, bearing sword, shield and the paraphernalia of a middle-ages knight. Tealeaf, The Rogue, aka Carol the Network Administrator from Nottingham, is arrayed like a pirate complete with black eye-patch. My partner Orcslayer is a Healing Paladin, fitted in metallic-coloured plastic breastplate, flowing scarlet skirt, and helmet resembling a Viking headpiece with two cow-horns."

"Thanks, Petros," I said, "I think that's enough." Added to this group of friends were more wizards, warriors and hunters, plus a dwarf resembling Gimli and the EPIC party increased in tempo.

Photographers and reporters from the Cheshire Gazette, forgiven by the family for the publication that nearly cost the lives of our Jewish friends, interviewed many of the guests. Uncle Saul and Goliath stayed out of the way of the media.

Once the press had gone the huge twenty-six stone man demonstrated his prowess and terpsichorean skills on the dance-floor. He lacked grace but not agility and enthusiasm. Dorke maintained a position at the perimeter of the party retiring periodically to gather more refreshments from the larger marquee: his plate never empty.

Some parties are fun. This was fun and EPIC!
