The Pier - The Drink - The Man

by Dklrdmcches

As you stroll down the crowded boardwalk of Belmar,
Take notice of the old - battered pier and its contents.
Sitting on a weathered grey bench, a man takes a snort
From a bottle that holds a key to his future, as well as his past.

Wearing clothes that probably have not been washed in years,
He peers out into the cold Atlantic, desperately seeking his love.
Alone in the world, he ponders his life and the direction its headed.
A seagull lands at his feet, begging for a handout which will never come.

Losing his love to a disease there is no cure for, the man began his
Solitary vigil at the one place that will not turn its back on him.
From dusk to dawn, he sits, stares and drinks his way to oblivion.
Many have tried to pursuade him to seek help, but to no avail.

As waves crash against the old wooden pier, the man notices a vision
Staring at him from the mists that are slowly embracing the shore.
Is this the love that he has been seeking? Is this his dear companion?
Closing his eyes at the gesture, the man with no name passes from this land.
