A desert epiphany
The Fox Hole

Billy carefully peered over the edge of the fox hole. There was nothing but sand and scrub, with a chill in the desert air that he knew wouldn't last.
Shaking the body next to him, he hissed, "Jimmy, wake up and let me rest." There was no response. He felt Jimmy's neck for a pulse. There was none.
He was alone, the last of an eight man squad. He bowed his head and prayed. "Lord, please make it quick and painless."
His body was infused with soothing warmth. A voice filled his thoughts, "Just rest. It's not your time."
