Lion Country

by Thesis

While photographing a pride of lions for an upcoming documentary, I came upon the scene of a fresh kill. Three lions were tearing apart a zebra as my Range Rover pulled within a few hundred feet.

While the crew set up the camera to film this amazing sight, I noticed one of the cats watching us. His bloodied face was particularly disturbing, but his eyes were terrifying.

I thought it time to roll the truck further back. Turning the ignition, my heart skipped a beat. No response. I tried again, realizing we were very vulnerable.

The lion could smell the crew's fear; one of whom jumped off the truck and ran for the safety of the trees behind us. Within a flash, the bloodied lion leapt to his feet and started running full speed toward the man. It was no contest.

The lion jumped on his back, sinking his fangs in the soft flesh of the neck, severing his spinal cord. With his own kill, the lion started tearing chunks of flesh and eating.

I tried the ignition again, this time it started. Driving back, I wondered how I was going to explain this to the man's wife.
