Ode To Khadijah

ODE TO KHADIJAH

Abu Fat'ma had a vision
thinking in his cave that night.
A niche contained a lamp within
emitting such a Perfect Light,

Perfect is the Light of Reason,
clearly he did see that night.
Truth abides in every season
so he surely saw the Light.

The lamp filled with sacred oil
from a bless-ed olive pressed --
as if grown in sacred soil
neither from the East nor West.

Perfect is the Light of Reason,
in the Parable that night.
Truth abides in every season;
clearly he could see the Light.

Truth is The God has full knowledge,
thus Muhammad knew that night;
so clearly was the sacred pledge
to let Muhammad see it right.

Perfect is the Light of Reason,
by the lamp he saw that night.
Truth abides in every season,
though not all will see the Light.

Khadijah was his faithful wife,
and always at his beck and call.
She knew the ventures of his life.
Um Fat'ma could sense it all.

Perfect is the Light of Reason,
to her husband came that night.
Truth abides in every season,
so she, too, could know the Light.

Khadijah was the first converted
person in the world to know.
Truth of Truth was now asserted.
She would help The Prophet show.

Perfect is the Light of Reason,
That he must have seen that night.
Truth abides in every season,
so he surely saw the Light.

When he told her of his vision,
as though she could read and write --
saw it as a perfect reason --
told him, "You should feel no fright."

Perfect is the Light of Reason,
in the Vision of this night;
Truth abides in every season,
surely she did know the Light.

You should let yourself be guided
by the Light that he has seen.
From that time has Truth abided
in The Prophet he has been.

True faith is the Light of Reason,
that Muhammad saw that night.
Truth abides in every season
leading some to see the Light.

Surrender now to Truth revealed --
the true Message does suffice.
The Message of The Prophet's sealed;
it's the key to Paradise.

God is Truth and Light of Reason,
That The Prophet saw that night.
Truth abides in every season;
come, you too can know the Light.

Ode to a Muslim contest entry

I used the theme of the Parable of the Light found in the Qur'an to honor Khadijah's role as wife of The Prophet (PBUH) to reassure her husband that he got it right. The ode has three components of a Strophe (non-highlighted stanzas), an Antistrophe (in italics non-highlighted), and an Epode (highlighted). The Epode includes the choral response to each stanza in the Strophe and the Antistrophe as well as the Epode theme. This could be sung in pairs of stanzas to Beethoven's Ode To Joy. (Abu Fat'ma is Father of Fatima, and Um Fat'ma is Mother of Fatima, the daughter of The Prophet (PBUH) and Khadijah.)

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His light is as if it were a niche containing a lamp; the lamp is [enclosed] in glass, the glass [shining] like a radiant star: [a lamp] lit from a blessed tree, an olive-tree that is neither of the east nor of the west, the oil whereof [is so bright that it] would well-nigh give light [of itself] even though fire had not touched it: light upon light! Allah guides unto His light him that wills [to be guided]; and [to this end] Allah propounds parables unto men, since Allah [alone] has full knowledge of all things." [24:35]
