When women pick up the gauntlet....
A chapter in the book Flash Fiction
Knights in Satin
by Begin Again
The difficult battle ended. The cannons were silent. Gunfire ceased. The King and Queen lay in state. Hundreds were dead or maimed. Women stood beside the remaining knights, their dresses ripped and stained, their tresses matted with blood.
Princess Zorra gazed at her subjects. Her beleaguered heart filled with pride.
Unrolling the proclamation, her soft voice found strength as she spoke, "Our castle is safe because of your courage."
A tear trickled down her cheek.
"You didn't hide in fear, but accepted the challenge. Standing beside fallen heroes, you fought. From this day forward, I pronounce you 'Knights in Satin, Freedom Fighters'.
The roar of the meager crowd was strong.
