A Heart of Rock and Steel

by eliz100

"Your heart is made of rock and steel just like your building," he said as he walked off the balcony and out of her life.

They said it couldn't be done, but she did it. Some called it a miracle, but she knew it was determination and hard work, her building. She designed and built the tallest, most beautiful building in the city.

As she gazed at the sea from the balcony of the penthouse, she thought of the fun she and Jeff had before--before the terrible accident. A night that changed her life forever. They were both in the car. She always wore her seatbelt. He thought he was invincable, no seatbelt.

They hit a patch of black ice. He lost control. The car skidded hitting a fruit vendor's cart and then slammed into a telephone pole. He landed across her lap, bleeding. She held him as he took his last breath.

"My love," she said as tears streamed down her face and her heart broke into a million tiny painful shards.

She jolted herself back to the present. 'Would another love ever be possible for her,' she wondered, 'or would rock and steel be her life?'

'Could a heart be rebuilt like a building?' she wondered.
