Rendezvous

Early dabbed at the moisture clouding the corners of his eyes. It was hot. But the sting of the sweat was nothing compared to the rage rumbling in his loins. He was anxious to finally breach his eighteen-year marriage vows. It was time to stand and be counted. He knew he should sing the praises of Agnes and his family back home, but that could wait.

The Beach Hotel boasted a flowing courtyard fountain where Early waited with his bags. When the bellhop carried them to his room, Early tipped him and quietly closed the door. At last. He removed his hat and eased himself down on the edge of the bed.

He smiled and moved the woman's wig away from her face while she slept. The back of his hand smoothed her cheek just as her eyes opened. Early's stomach dropped like a runaway elevator in a skyscraper.

"Agnes?"
