Maritime Miracle

by Terry Reilly

The small ship blustered through the swell,

so ill-prepared for squally seas.

The men aboard were far from well,

all smitten by a rare disease.

*

Their skin had turned a rusty gold,

dull eyes were dusky yellow, too.

“It’s jaundice,” an old sea dog told,

“I recognise that ghastly hue.”

*

No sound of merriment was heard

the stricken shipmates groaned and sighed.

An albatross appeared – that bird!

“We’re doomed,” one Jeremiah cried.

*

Then  Captain Billy Reuben said,

“the answer lies in Heav’n above.

Our hearts are seized by fear and dread,

let’s trust in God’s enduring love.”

*

Those weary sailors bowed their heads,

and formed a prayerful fellowship.

Although their nerves were torn to shreds

on slender hopes they kept a grip.

*

Then suddenly the seas died down,

a kinder wind now bulged the sail.

Each sailor showed a puzzled frown,

their xanthic skin once more was pale.

*

“A miracle!” the captain yelled,

“The Lord has answered all our prayers.

Our faith in Him has been upheld,

He’s banished all our worldly cares!”
