Know your enemy

Predator and Prey

by CD Richards

By the field where sheep lie sleeping
Prowls a wolf in silence creeping
Eyeing off the meal he's seeking
In the moonlight bright and clear
Silent footsteps sheep don't hear

Ancient stories of the times when
Devils got into the sheep pen
Causing pain and death and mayhem
Fill the dreams of sheep with fear
Visions that won't disappear

Watchfully the shepherd stands guard
Out there by the rusty stockyard
And the sheep have learned to discard
Thoughts of peril while he's near
Their protector they hold dear

In the woods a wolf is lying
He'll do no more multiplying
Of starvation he is dying
No sheep at this wolf's buffet
He's a corpse by break of day

To the farm shed walks the shepherd
Where a single lamb waits tethered
Till his jugular is severed
And his lifeblood drains away
No more will he romp and play

Ere the hapless lamb's cut into
Ma gives praises to the one who
By the faith that she was born to
Sends their daily bread this day
"Amen" all the children say

Why do sheep dread Canis Lupus?
They'd do better if they feared us
And the shepherd is their Brutus
First win trust and then betray
