A man who is struggling with self-confidence and belief

One man's search for confidence

by Laura Emily

Confidence, what a wonderful feeling
He said to himself as he stared at the ceiling
Confidence made him believe in himself
It was so good for his mental health
It made him feel invincible and so strong
But where, oh where has his confidence gone?
He had it once, but the world beat him down
Stress and responsibility furrowing his brow
As pressure grew, he started to doubt himself
And confidence, it took a back shelf
Worries set in; the nerves reappeared
Now he's gripped by self-doubt and fear
He tried searching for confidence- is it under the bed?
Where did it go, was it something he said?
Is it hiding in bushes, lurking round the corner?
Can he buy some online or by mail order?
He's looked everywhere, searched all round
But his confidence is nowhere to be found
So, he decides to go out on the street
And ask a question to everyone he meets
"I'm looking for confidence, where can I find it?
See I had some once and I really quite liked it"
But the people ignore him, they think he's quite mad
And the man is growing increasingly sad
Until he meets an old gent with a kind smile
Who says 'I'll help you lad, if you've got a while
Your confidence never left; your mind told you wrong
It was there, right inside of you, all along
You just need to follow your intuition
It's screaming at you, if only you'll listen
So silence the criticism, cut yourself some slack
You're trying to protect yourself, but it's holding you back
You see, there's no reason not to believe
That you can have anything you set out to achieve
And don't listen to others, people get jealous
And we believe the negative things that they tell us
When they say you'll never make it so don't even try
But what if you soar, my boy, what if you fly?
So go after your dreams lad, shoot for the stars
And if you only reach the moon, that's still pretty far
Now don't you fear failure, it's the best teacher
And confidence? Where's that illusive creature?
See you knew where to find it all of this time
Because I'm not really here, I'm a figment of your mind
And your confidence was never on the back of the shelf
It's always been there, right inside of yourself"

The First Milestone
This authors first post!
A Milestone Post

With this poem I wanted to explore the topic of self-doubt and self-criticism, and needing to believe in ourselves more.
The old man giving advice to the younger man came about as the poem evolved.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
