Lost on the street of my blind date.

Blind Date

My first year of high school was at a private, all boys school forty miles from home.
To get there I had to take a train and two bus rides. I was not a happy camper. To be on the football
and track teams I would get home at seven in the evening, eat, do my homework and hit the
sheets.

It took me all summer to convince mom and dad to allow me to go to our town's public high school.
Going to a new school I only knew a handful of kids. Luckily I made the varsity football team as a
running back and became friends with some of the older guys.

"Going to the dance on September 24th?" Pat asked."We have a game that afternoon." Pat was one of the other halfbacks on the team.

"Heck no. I only know a few girls and they all have boyfriends." I closed my locker and started off to my next class.

Well, good old Pat and his girlfriend got me a blind date with a girl from the junior class by the name of Carol. They didn't tell me her last name and said they would get me her address after the football game on Saturday afternoon.

Our team was lucky and won the game by six points with Pat making the winning touchdown. In the locker room he handed my a soiled sheet of paper with Carol's address, 309 Bradley Ave. or what looked like 309.

Not having a driver's license my older brother drove to the address I gave him. Bradley Ave. was a well known street where many of the town's doctors and lawyers lived. We stopped at 309 and I saw that the front door light was not on. I got out of the car and walked up to the front porch and nervously rang the door bell.

A man with pure white hair opened the door, looked at me with a frown and asked, "Can I help you?"

Somewhat confused I said, " Sir, I'm Larry and Carol is my date for the school dance. Is she ready?"

"There is no Carol here. What's her last name? You must be lost."

I told him I had no last name but showed him the address I was given and he suggested to try 39 or 319.

I apologized for disturbing him and said goodnight.

Five minutes later I was at 319 meeting Carol for the first time along with her parents. We had a great time at the dance and a few laughs with Pat and his girlfriend about me getting lost.

Five years later we had our first child on September 24th.
