I didn't know it was a men's breakfast
The Surprise Was On Me

I was excited to surprise my old neighbor Wally Hilgenberg. I dressed up and headed to hear him speak. Walking in with confidence, I froze with embarrassment! It was a men’s breakfast! Awkwardly smiling, I performed a 180-degree spin and bolted, hoping no one noticed this lone, overdressed female exit.

Wally was a professional football player that lived in the same apartment complex our family lived in. We hung out often as I played with his kids and babysat.
I drove by a church about 25 years later near a town I lived in that had an advertisement with Wally's name as the speaker for that upcoming Saturday.
Excited to see him again I showed up and walked in not knowing it was a men's breakfast. Mortified, I turned around and left. I guess I wouldn't have gotten to see him because he was in the hospital and they had a different speaker.
