For The Mirror Contest

Smile

by Jessica Wheeler

I cover the surfacing truth
with a palette that pleases the glass,
perfecting the craft of a practiced reflection–
the mirror's most promising artist.

I pull on my sweater and shell
to smother the racket within,
to stifle the voices that beat beneath buttons
and beg for my scream to release.

Yet sealed are the polished red lips
on the mask I have made for the mirror,
and wide is the satisfied smile it displays–
the widest I ever did paint.
