Christmas Time

by Bryce 1

I got invited to the party pretty much at the last minute. Some friends of mine were talking about it and they were surprised I hadn't been invited. In the spirit of Christmas, and perhaps just to see what would happen, they brought me along. I'd like to note that I was friends with nearly everyone who was going to be there that night, therefore, it wasn't totally out of the question for me to arrive, even if I didn't get an invitation. I truly did not think anyone would realize. That is, until I got there.

Almost instantly, I realized why my invitation had not arrived, Sara was there. Now, Sara and I used to work together and we really hit it off for a while until I became entangled with her supervisor. That affair ended quickly, as those types tend to, but Sara never really seemed the same after that. I figured she had a thing for me all the while because I had a thing for her! God's honest truth, I one hundred percent did not realize how strong and easy a connection I had with her. We got along so seamlessly that it went right over my head how rare that type of give and take can be. I remember a few times we'd cover a whole conversation with just a few seconds of eye contact, and still I couldn't see! Anyway, well, there she was, glass of wine in hand, staring me down from across the room.

Now I know what you're thinking: "There's a mistletoe somewhere under which Sara and our narrator will find themselves, in some Christmas miracle of Love". Wrong. I wish it were true too I really do but, wrong. The night wandered on as the drinks were slowly drank. A few hours went by and every now and then I'd look around, just to make sure she hadn't left. I'd spot her, sometimes doing the same thing with me, I assume, and then we'd be back to whatever we were pretending to do. I remember chatting with a friend about God knows what and just having the feeling that she was looking my way. I did not care to find out because, well I just knew she was, and I was not offended at all.

It was getting late in the night and I was exiting the bathroom. I walked all but three feet and practically collided with Sara. She spilled her drink on my shirt as we both yelped, unsuspectingly startled and under a mistletoe. Sometimes life serves you moments that are just too perfect, in those moments, I always feel like God is somewhere laughing it up. I turned around and went right back into the bathroom to clean off as much wine as I could, although even the slightest hue will glare from the white shirt I had so tactfully chosen for the night. She told me how sorry she was and how badly I scared her. She even started to blame me for apparently walking way too fast and proceeding to ask me what it was I was so eager to return to anyway. At that, I peaked in her eyes finally, just a peak, and I saw it all too well.

It was like I've never felt it before: such strong, palpable love, there in the room with us and for us, seeming to force us together in an arrangement I could never, ever deny. And she was beautiful too, devastatingly radiant. I couldn't help but stop what I was saying and just take her in, all for myself right there. It was one of the strangest connections I ever had in my life. Sometimes I think that love itself was fine tuning our connection and bolstering it during our time apart. So when the time we actually met again, love was stronger than it ever was before, all part of love's plan it would seem. Her dark brown hair, perfect pink lips and eyes that left no room to go anywhere but her beautiful soul. It was all too much. So, like a reflex I never knew I had, I kissed her, in the bathroom of a party I was never invited to, in the arms of a girl I loved.
