Prank in the Park

by Peter Jarvis

Young Jimmy Miller (known as Dusty) prided himself on being the master of prank. He was not really naughty, just a playful, boisterous little boy who loved playing pranks on others.

On Saturday morning Dusty looked out of his bedroom window and, on seeing a thick blanket of snow, he saw an opportunity too good to miss. He chuckled silently to himself.

As the neighborhood kids gathered for a day of sledding, Dusty's mischievous plan took shape. He donned a pair of oversized clown shoes that his father had bought at a car boot sale last summer. Waddling awkwardly and out of sight of the kids sledding he left a trail of  wacky, king-size footprints across the park into the woods.

The kids soon spotted the enermous tracks and their imaginations ran wild. Tiny Tim hollered "Look everyone! Look it must be Billy Bigfoot" as he pointed to the shapes imprinted in the deep snow, his eyes wide with excitement and his legs  tremblled with  the collywobbles. "We have to follow them, come on you lot"

The group set off, giggling and whispering about the legendary creature they were sure was nearby. Dusty watched from behind a tree, barely containing his laughter as he watched the kids stumbled over each other, falling head first into the snow.

The footprints led to an abandoned crofter's shed where Dusty was waiting  inside with uncontrollable excitement and a little surprise for the approaching group. As the kids approached cautiously, he suddenly jumped out dressed as a clown with a grotesque mask and brandishing a huge rubber mallet, howling playfully. The kids shrieked, half in fear, half in delight, before collapsing into fits of laughter.

Dusty pulled off the mask, revealing his beaming face. The kids cheered, knowing that Dusty had fooled them again.
