The Power of Lizards

by Avery Daniel

Life is funny; God especially has a great sense of humor. But it isn’t always obvious. I have been to the point where I was pressed to find some sort of sign God hadn’t made a mistake sparing my life, and wildlife found a way to give me that sign.

I believe God controls the animals, especially the wild ones. Specifically for me, God brought me a sign in the form of lizards. Lizards. Yes, lizards popped up whenever I was seeking deeper faith, and consequently, I now believe lizards have this higher meaning and are connected to true divinity. I nearly always see at least one when I’m feeling really down.

The “sign” for you, however, may be totally different. It truly does seem like God always has a way to make each situation lighter. Our loving father can comfort us in many ways. Sometimes, when you feel as if he’s abandoned you, a soft wind starts to pick up, making you feel young and alive again. Or maybe a lizard scurries by.

Sometimes, God’s complex humor wants you to experience pain for a higher meaning. People often struggle to comprehend why things had to happen the way they did. Why was I forced to the deepest pits my mind had ever seen? Does my illness feel more like a punishment? In reality, our shortcomings may be our greatest gifts. Sometimes, God wishes for us to have a different perspective. He knew I wouldn’t die, yet he allowed me to exist in a suicidal state for years. He knew I needed to be in that pit. Why? I’m not sure, but I have faith he’s doing what is truly right. And I still don’t know my life’s purpose; it can be as simple as making one person feeling validated.
