Joined the Navy

by HarryT

Two years after Pearl Harbor, he was seventeen
When my Uncle Stan joined the U.S. Navy
His parents wouldn’t sign they were not keen
So a friend forged my grandfather’s signature

He trained at Great Lakes as a radioman
Later on his ship, during general quarters
Assigned a 40mm Bofors which he did man
His ship brought Marines to Iwo Jima, and Okinawa

But his most memorable moment came
When his ship was on its way to Japan
Three days out from Japan his heart aflame
He heard the wonderful words on his radio

             JAPANESE SURRENDER!

He ran the message up to the Capitan
Uncle Stan didn’t talk much about the battles
Japanese aircraft attacking with guns blazing
He lost a good friend in a kamikaze attack

But he loved to talk about the end of the war
How happy both the Marines and sailors were
Toasting each other their hope was restored
They had made it, they were coming home...
