There once was a girl who flew too close to the sun.

Lady Bird

by LaniLark

Once there was a girl who took to the sky,
The sun kissing her with golden lips.
A warm dance seen only by bird's eye,
She embraced the feel of a burning eclipse.

At night she'd watch the moon and wait,
Too eager to sleep or to dream.
Then finally, as if it were her fate,
She'd fly back into those bright, golden beams.

For hours she'd swim in the warmth of those rays,
Too consumed to noticed the burns on her wings.
She fell in love with the lights and the blaze,
And the warmth that the flames always bring.

Then one morning as she was set to take flight,
She noticed the holes on her back.
She screamed, and she sobbed, and she ached at the sight,
Of the smoke and what was now black.

She spent her days missing that citrusy glow,
Her one and only desire.
An eternity on the ground where she would grow cold,
But forever a child of the fire.
