A small girls passing

A chapter in the book The Poets Menagerie

Cara

by Lea Tonin1

Brown of hair, blue of eye

Grinning mouth one tooth shy

Dad, child and friend makes three

Joyful girl glad and free

These two friends good old boys

ATV bush bound toy

Too much drink slurred their words

Small girl played diving birds

On the bike friend and child

Through the bush track was wild

Misplaced turn flipped the quad

Down ravine scraped and clawed

Up the road truck tires scream

Stops a car worked their scheme

"She fell off back of truck"

"Broke her leg just bad luck"

Woman starts CPR

Ambulance can't be far.

Breath nor life could she find

Smell of death clear, defined

Child left where help was found

Hope of life she was bound

Down the hall cops were there.

Dad and friend cuffs they wear

Homicide spoke that night

Lie they told, skip the fight

Back to nurse she was near

"Dead, you know that my dear"

Mind in shock by Dad's tale

In my heart, bursting wail

In my mind she will stay

Won't forget girl at play

This is a true story happened approximately 35 years ago on a stretch of highway no to far from my mother and her partners fishing & hunting resort. I'm still shocked to this day of the lie they told to get out of trouble. It hecame more important than a child's life.
