Growth from What We Thought We Needed, Using Nature

Nature of Yearning

by Sophia Mendez

I love you.

And my hope is you love me too.

Like I hope for rain, or a sky of blue.

And so, I fear you

And what you may do

Unknown to me like the deep ocean blue.

Yet I still yearn, and feel how I feel

Like a tall fire, burning real

Hot to the touch, but warm from afar

My selfish cares must remain ajar

Yet due to the pain of a burn on the hand

Could I perhaps begin to understand

The way you are and the way I am

The roots of my mind and where this began

I could grow from the pain and be set free

Standing taller and freer, a wondrous tree

Being something I thought I could not be

Perhaps by you, but surely by me

With my understanding I come to trust

Like I would, the sun, to come after dusk

For I have learned the things I must

And learn, I will, at my next cusp

And so now, I choose to love once more

I risk the pain from the ones I adore

Add on to the loves that I've once bore...

To then learn it was not love before.
