Love Your Moons

by Erik Rosales

Love your moons

Care for them like daughters

If you have none

Care for them like sons

If you have neither

You’re the lucky one

Because the moon

 was meant for you

Moons to blink under in new agonies of spring

Moons to sing under in gold gleaming fall

Moons to go home to on fragile white light nights

Moons to fill with amber liquid and somersault down silent city corridors

I never loved my moons

My moons I denied

Starved to mere slivers

Choked with sleep

I never broke for fence lines

in the dead of night

I never clawed from earth to stand in the doorway of hereafter

and call out my birthright

Moons call

When my moons called I turned over and nevermind

When my moons called I ate up the light between my shutters and mummified

And now all the pale heads come rolling from yesterday, to smother me

Love your moons
