Personal reflection upon hearing the results of the election

Reaction

by Ellen Frank Bayer

I feel the wind on my face

I see Lady Liberty in the harbor

I hear the helicopters roar

I smell the saltwater

The stone cold bench is seeping into my body

I am here

I am present

I will live through this

It could be worse

It could always be worse

I am outside

I am not in a hospital

I am not a hostage

I have a home

I have a job

I have a family

I can see

I can feel

I can walk

I can sing

I can rise above the noise

I can clear my mind

I can tune out or tune in

I can choose.

I am a lifelong New Yorker who loves all the parts of New York City, including the wildlife in the subway. I have been writing poetry to empty my mind of the ghosts of the past and the uncertainty of the present.
