'Twas Halloween Night

by Jake P.

'Twas Halloween night, and all through the street,
The shadows were dancing, a chill in the heat.
The pumpkins grotesque, their faces aglow,
With flickering candles that put on a show.

The children were buzzing in costumes so bright,
From witches to pirates, all ready for fright.
And Mama in her apron, with treats piled high,
Smiled warmly, preparing for ghosts passing by.

When out in the distance there arose such a sound,
I sprang from my chair to see what was around.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters to witness the clash.

The moon hung like silver, casting shadows so deep,
As whispers of spirits, grumbling, nearby did  creep.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a ghost on a broomstick, flying quite near!

With a cackle and swoosh, she glided with grace,
I knew in a moment this was no normal place.
More rapid than lightning, her minions did come,
As she shouted their names, “Now, Goblins! Now, Ghouls!
Now, Witches and Wights!
On, Zombies! On, Phantoms! Let’s give them a fright!
To the edge of the yard! To the top of the fence!
Now dash away, dash away, it’s all so intense!”

As leaves that before the wild tempest do fly,
When they swirl in the moonlight, and shadows grow high.
So up from the graveyard, the creatures they rose,
With laughter and mischief, their eerie prose.

And then, with a rustle, I heard on the ground
The shuffle of footsteps, a soft, ghostly sound.
As I peeked out the door my heart nearly froze
A goblin evilly grinning stood there composed.

Pointed green ears, with strange glowing eyes,
It caused me to falter, he was not in disguise.
His bag overflowing with skin, hair, and bone.
So frightened I was as I stood there alone.

Then laying a finger alongside of his nose,
He scurried away as the night’s magic rose.
With giggles and screams, they dashed for the fun,
Determined to gather each sweet, sticky bun.

Then off into shadows, they vanished from sight,
With memories of mischief that sparkled with light.
But I heard them exclaim, as they raced out of view,
“Happy Halloween to all, and to all, boo-hoo!”
