The Devil's Lake Hike

It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Jenny and I left our college vacation campsite to hike the cliff trail. Steep, it started well marked and fairly easy. By the time we were hunting for our next hand and footholds, clinging to the nearly invisible path, it was easier to keep going up rather than back down.
Reaching the top, we followed a forest firebreak downhill until we found the railroad tracks. We knew they ran past our campsite so followed them until, climbing the thorny embankment, we found our tent and collapsed, scratched, sweaty, exhausted.
Never again!

My college roommate and I had been swimming at the Devil's Lake beach while camping in the state park. We looked up at the nearby cliff and saw two little figures at the top, climbing. "You wouldn't get me up there," I told Jenny. Famous last words as, later that day, we decided to go for a pre-dinner hike and actually ended up in the very same position we'd seen the climbers. We'd gotten off the marked trail somehow and were precariously making our way up because we couldn't retrace our way down. After a long firebreak hike down the backside & a further couple miles following the train tracks, we made it back to our campsite in, more or less, one piece.
