Desperate Measures

I had to kill him.

Everytime I fled he dragged me back.

The beatings were increasingly severe.

Saturday nights were intolerable.

Drunkenness exacerbated his brutality.

I cowered, trembling, as the door opened.

I lunged, he stumbled, the knife ripping his sleeve.

He laughed, unbuckling his belt.

I prayed for death.
