A Visit with Harper
by RodG
My Favorite Poet/Writer # 2 Contest Winner
At midnight, I was still working in my study on a literature lesson
for my sophomores. A cool Fall breeze blew through my open
window. I rose from my chair to close it.
"Hello," a voice said behind me.
I turned and gasped. "Harper Lee! But you're--"
"Dead, yes, but I still make promotional appearances," she laughed. "I'm pleased you recognized me."
"Why wouldn't I? Your picture is on the cover of my all-time favorite book, To Kill a Mockingbird." A hardback copy lay facedown on my desk.
"I'm visiting because you're a would-be writer. Tell me about that book you're secretly writing." She pointed at a desk drawer and smiled. "It isn't about prejudice and courage, I hope."
I shook my head. "I'm not a copy-cat. But it is about teenagers having problems growing up and life-lessons learned."
"Like it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
"Well, I haven't come up with a theme that memorable, but a few ideas are burbling. Do you have any advice for me?"
She stared out the window a moment. ""Write to please an audience of one: Yourself. And write! Don't just think about it."
And my dream abruptly ended.
