Modern Tanka (rules in author notes)
A chapter in the book 2024 Gypsy's Tanka
* In the Middle of the Night *
by Gypsy Blue Rose
in the middle of the night, the phone call everyone dreads — now all she has left is his lingering scent on their bed

Modern Tanka is a Japanese unrhymed poem with 31 syllables arranged in five lines; English tanka is 31 syllables or LESS because Japanese and English syllables are different. Tanka originated in the 6th century at the Imperial Court where lovers wrote tanka poems to each other after a night of lovemaking. click here if you want to read modern tanka examples click here if you want to read modern tanka rules
