Two Woofers

by Claire Tennant

There are two woofers known to us
we tease our 'fur child son'
the other is a neighbour's pooch
as bossy as they come
I caught them yacking one day
my imagination went wild
how would it be if Miss Bossy
aggravated our fur child?

"Zoey, darling, enough is enough
how dare you speak so of Mum
you are becoming a little bore
Though a great chum
she welcomes you into our home, yet
you take over "How come?"
are you wanting to stay the night
she'd need convincing, then some

"Zack darling, she is a nice lady
though I cannot understand her
is it English she speaks
or is she a Queenslander?"
Zack looked at her in a haughty way
"I tell you something, Zoey
You're a might cheeky today
We are of French blood
It does not matter a jot
Mum accepts both of us as we are
despite her being a Scot

"A Scot? Your Mum does not talk like them."
"Aye, Zoey dear, she does
It causes mayhem
If I misbehave, she stares
I want to do a runner
Oh, the dulcet tones as she yells
"Come inside, ya wee scunner."

"Zack darling, are you afraid of her?
you will need to grow up
if you and I remain friends
act like a man, not a pup."
I wonder if her words hit home
there is still a gleam in Zack's eye
Oh no, frantic barking
Perhaps Zoey is nearby
