Red

by jim vecchio

At the age of ten, don’t you know
He worked in a medicine show
On a showboat, and in burlesque
He did not hide behind a desk!
Radio, on Fleischman’s Yeast Hour
Gave him recognition and power
Screen debut with Ginger Rogers
Edna and he were married lodgers
One radio show was a zinger
Harriet Nelson was his singer
He had talent, was no forger
His second wife was named Georgia
TV fame came in ‘fifty-one
Viewers recall they had such fun
Like many clowns, tragedy lurked
Son died of cancer while he worked
His show scored often in top ten
CBS was to him, no friend
Though his humor never did pale
They said he was old and stale
‘Seventy-four brought him some joys
He auditioned for Sunshine Boys
Talent showed as he produced art
It seemed that he would never part
He gave us smiles and never frowns
And always drew paintings of clowns
At five he woke, no sleep at night
And then he would take pen and write
Of his kind, I wish we had more
He said Farewell, age eighty-four
