An alchemy of the spirit

Alchemy

by estory

This magic life
Balanced on the head of a pin
As it comes to an end

Threads the eyes of needles
From caravans of camels
To the fingerprints of angels

Sparkling
Like snow in the treetops
On a winter's morning

When the sunlight spins
Ivory, copper, jade, onyx, gold

Out of what we used to be.

I would say this poem is in a little more opened up, free verse style, somewhat in the vein of Denise Levertov, maybe. It is a poem of passage, from this world to the next, from this life to the life to come. I wanted to make that next life seem bright and colorful, so I picked these bright, metallic images spun out of sunlight to symbolize the released soul. The allusions to the camels going through the eyes of needles is from a lesson of Jesus in the gospels when he speaks about the difficulty of getting into heaven. But of course in the end he says with God, anything is possible, so I wanted to capture that hope we can have to turn death into a passageway. Well, this is it for a bit in poetry, I will now post a couple of short stories from my new Dreams collection. estory
