Dedicated to all those who protect us...
You Grow Heroic
by Patrick Bernardy
The siren signals peril,
and the peril swirls you steady, for in troubled times, you grow heroic. Yesterday, you walked with us amidst our crowded fear,
and tomorrow, you'll shrink back and blend anew, but today, you're a titan astride this rift of sorrow. You are now, not then or tomorrow,
and now is what we need you to be. Strong hands gentle,
furrowed brow kind, harsh voice soothing— you hurl assurances like ring buoys, and we believe. You risk everything you are for every one of us.
Every one of us owes you everything we are. Yesterday, you worried with us on the eve of peril.
Today, you're a titan astride this rift of sorrow. How many of us will witness tomorrow
because you grow heroic in times of trouble? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
~If you are or have been a police officer, firefighter, emergency medical tech, ambulance driver, nurse, ER doctor, military veteran or actively deployed, please take this poem as my personal thank you for what you do to protect humanity. Sometimes you just need reminding how much all of us need you and are thankful to have you.
