Maintaining Equilibrium

by Rachelle Allen

We watched our country's light dim
as its discontent blossomed.
Do all countries feel this grim?
Beleaguered spirits jostled?

Afloat, we try to ignite
and connect our weary souls
before our anger takes flight
and deadens all further goals.

Kanshi's importance is as a medium for public exchange on social and political topics. It was created with rhyme-matching exchanges among Japanese and Qing Chinese poets throughout the 19 th century, as seen through exchange of letters and through newspapers.

Kanshi sociality enabled a transnational discourse that gave expression both to notions of shared cultural bonds between Japan and China and to ideas of poetic and cultural nationalism that included rhyme-matching sequences in four or eight lines of seven syllables.
