A conflicted man and his sick wife

His Wife

by Pamusart

Her sultry voice and slender legs,
his breath gets fast, libido begs.
He sees her dance and lick her lips,
and, loves the way she swings her hips.

He's jealous of the single guys.
They won't be needing his disguise.
Before he comes he'll ditch his ring.
What happens here won't mean a thing.

He's married with a lovely wife,
who gave him kids and love of life.
He feels unworthy of her trust.
He must decline his growing lust.

He thinks it's been a hundred times,
his evil thoughts committed crimes.
So far they're just inside his head.
He's sure his wife has gone to bed.

She's lost the weight that she desired.
But, still she always looks so tired.
He leaves the club and heads on home.
It's not her fault he'll always roam.

He puts his key inside the lock,
and waves to neighbors down the block.
A note is underneath the door,
and now it lies upon the floor.

He starts to read about her news.
His wife's been struggling with the blues.
She keeps on losing lots of weight,
and, she's been crying much of late.

The note says she is very sick,
that walls he built were way too thick,
about the cancer he denies.
He shakes and can't believe his eyes.

He wonders why she didn't tell,
about how she's not feeling well.
He swears he didn't have a clue.
Ignoring her is nothing new.

It's choking him with anguished tears.
They've been together thirty years.
He feels the guilt that drives his shame,
for treating life like it's a game.

It looks like she is fast asleep,
but, pretty soon he starts to weep.
Her heart has stopped, her life is done.
The sky and she are now as one.

He isn't welcomed at the wake.
His feelings there are wide awake.
Her father's temper starts to flare,
and, asks him why he didn't care.

Surprised he feels the urge to scream.
Her father's nostrils start to steam.
He could not face that she would die,
so he withdrew when she would cry.

Soon after that he stayed away,
but, much too late, he's back today.
