Discovering myself on a hike.
Nowhere
by Karen Dougherty Estep
I saw you walking on a path toward the woods and I followed, curious as to what you were searching for. So young to be walking alone, I saw your blonde curls bouncing as you skipped ahead. You reminded me of me,
and how I enjoyed exploring things as a child.
You walked into an opening in the woods, a place where people had gathered for a picnic. You ran to a group of teenagers and took the hand of a girl that, by the obvious familial resemblance, had to be your sister. I saw myself in her being a teenager, making jokes with my girlfriends. I saw myself with old acquaintances that played a leading role in helping me grow into the person I am today.
I then followed you girls to the water and watched as you spoke to the older women who had their feet in the stream. You all laughed and played together, splashing one another. It reminded me of my mother who died when I was young and how I longed to have these memories with her. The generations together created a picture of my life now with my own children and grandchildren.
Me and myself stood behind a tree watching and smiling.
When everyone had gone, I walked to the stream and put my feet in. Looking at my reflection in the water, I saw a whole person. Me, myself and I standing there, older and wiser.
