I hated that colour as a kid, but no longer

A Colour of Nature

by Claire Tennant

Blue is the colour of my darling’s eyes

as he gazes at me

blue, the colour of a happy sky

the sun and clouds agree

blue and white, the colours

our football team displays

blue the mood swing when

the team has a failure day

Blue the favourite colour of some

who wear fashions in that hue

or the painted weatherboards

on the house of someone I knew

Blues music rhythm or lyrics

also take that cue

the sea bright or murky

claims that colour, too

It is becoming a favourite now

that I’m climbing in my years

blue mood envelops me

fear and doubt appear

but if I show my age

and not use hair dye

remember the old-fashioned bluish haze

in years gone by?

I am troubled in reflection of the years that washed away

but I will still be a feisty old bat when my hair is grey
