After the Eye

Winds howl, people brace,
Nature’s fury takes its toll,
In the eye, all is calm—
After the storm, normacy.

Hurricane Ernesto directly hit Bermuda as the eye of the storm passed over Bermuda on Saturday August 17th at 5:30am till 8:00am as a CAT 1 hurricane with winds of 80 -85 miles per hour. at its peak 75% of the island's homes lost power and there were some areas that experienced flooding and trees were downed and utility poles were toppled around the island. Beach sand from John Smith's Bay beach was blown onto Watch Hill Road resulting in the road closure. Across the island damage was minimal, no injuries or major incidents occurred and there was no loss of life reported.

The International Airport was reopened at 12:00 noon on Sunday, Cruise ships resumed their scheduled calls, power has been restored across the island, bus and ferry service resumed, beaches are open, all the main roads have been cleared of debris, schools and business have reopened and all Government operations have resumed as of 8:00am Monday August 19th.
