The Greatest Grandad

by Lewis Searle

A grandad is so special, there is no one quite the same.
The moment I met mine, my best friend he became.
His voice was soft, and his heart was kind,
These memories of him will never leave my mind...

He would take me for walks (we both loved the outdoors)
To our favourite place in the middle of the moors:
A small secret village all hidden away,
And from his side I would never stray.
Through fields and forests, up mountains we climbed,
These memories of him will never leave my mind.
Come the Summer’s sun or the Winter’s snow,
Nothing would stop us: on we’d go!
Along clifftops by the sea,
No one else: him and me!
Over bridges,
Atop ridges,
And all the way home...
Until the next time we would go out and dare to roam,
Wondering what on Earth we would next find,
These memories of him will never leave my mind.

He would also tell stories about all kinds of things,
My favourites were his tales of queens and kings,
Dragons and knights,
Their quests and fights!
And of pirates and treasure,
Their riches beyond measure!
One day we were helping to free some imprisoned slaves,
The next underground, exploring the deepest of caves,
Overcoming all the challenges we would ever face,
He had many more stories than any bookcase,
Each and every tale was one-of-a-kind,
These memories of him will never leave my mind.

Oh, and he was also an artist, he painted and drew,
How he did it, I haven’t a clue!
His mind was magic, the paintbrush his wand,
His favourite was a painting of a frog in a pond.
But my favourite is one he drew just for me,
Of a trio of rabbits playing under a tree,
A unique piece, in the corner he signed,
These memories of him will never leave my mind.

And not forgetting his cooking, he made delightful food,
He knew just what to cook for my every mood,
When sad, cheese on toast would make everything okay,
When happy, a fruitcake would make my day,
When I couldn’t sleep hot chocolate would do,
When feeling ill it was a vegetable stew,
The most delicious foods known to the whole of mankind,
These memories of him will never leave my mind.

But, saving the best for last, my grandad’s best feature:
He was my kindest, wisest, and best ever teacher!
He taught me things that no one else could,
Lessons that have stayed with me, and so they should.
This is what every great granddad is for,
To let you free in the world to explore,
But always there when you need them too,
When tough times come, to coach you through.

And now you know why my grandad was so amazing,
There was no one quite the same who deserves such praising,
With his voice so soft, and his heart so kind,
These memories of him will never leave my mind.
