Ode to Medford, Oregon

by jake cosmos aller

I have slowly over the years

Become an Oregonian.

Spending my summers

In Medford, Oregon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been going there since

The early 60s

My father had a summer cabin

 In Yakima, Washington.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We often

stopped in Medford

for the night.

---------------------------------------------------

We went to the cabin

 Every summer for two months

As my father, being a college professor,

Had the summer off.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bought property in Medford

Two duplexes

Recently renovated them

Becoming an Airbnb super host.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Going each year

To the Shakespeare festival

 Wine tastings, hiking

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Checking out Ashland

Oregon coastal towns.

Along the way

Gambling in Indian Casinos.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adopting the Oregon male uniform

Khakis, or jeans,

T-shirt and western-style plaid shirt.

Baseball cap, boots

No one wears a tie in Oregon

Beard as no proper Oregon man shaves.

-------------------------------------------------

Scraggly beard – no one shaves.
