Sleep Can Be Scary

by HarryT

Lying in bed, I hear a chilling sound
Shadows spooned by full moon round
Windowpane rattling, a cold breath fear
I know there’s a phantom lingering near

Eyes open wide, ears perk to peak
I hear footsteps echoing squeaks?
Pull my sheet over my panicking head
“Please, please I don’t want to be dead”
I scream out a piercing, fear-stricken cry
“Please leave here, I don’t want to die.”

A cold hand reaches under my sheet
Touches my fearful, trembling cheek
Mom says rescuing words I needed to hear
“Okay, my son, a bad dream, nothing to fear.”
